Nevada City, CA

The National Hotel

Nevada City is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It is about 50 miles west of the north end of Lake Tahoe. The altitude is about 2600 feet at our home. There are many hills. We are above the valley fog and usually below the snow fall. Although we do get some of the white stuff.

Nevada City is an old, gold-mining town and was the third largest city in California in the 1850s. Today, while small with a population of a little more than 3000 people, it is the county seat and a gathering place for people who live in the surrounding mountains.

There are many good restaurants, a variety of bars, two live theaters, a cultural center, four wine tasting rooms and a variety of shops. Several bars and restaurants have entertainment on weekends. Some have entertainment other nights. Friar Tuck's has live music nightly.

Friar Tuck's Bar & Restaruant
Our favorite hangout. George Souza, John Girton, Jonathan Meredith, Kelly Fleming, and Dave Halford are the regular entertainers. Other people play weekends.
The National Hotel
The old flavor of Nevada City. It has been in operation for 150 years. We haven't been going there quite that long.
Ike's Quarter Cafe
Everything on the menu is great.
Bistro 221
Varied menu. Evertning is good. I like the jambalaya!
Sopa Thai Cuisine
We love Thai food and this is excellent. It's nice on the patio in good weather. Panang Curry is one of my favorites.
Nevada City Restaurant List
There are many good restaurants. There is not one on the list we do not go to at some time.
Miner's Foundry
All kinds of stuff happens here. We're long time members of "Friends of the Foundry" and Glady served as President of the Board of Trustees from July 2008 to July 2012.
Chamber of Commerce
A lot of info at their website. We're associate members and work on the Mardi Gras committee.

A view at Broad Street & Pine. Downtown.
Celtic Society
A fun group! Their meetings are social, entertaining and educational. The Robert Burn's Dinner in January is quite a celebration. We were going to the Burn's Dinner before we were members and even before we moved to Nevada City.
