Air Force - Philippine, Islands
I loved the Philippines. Marcos was in his first term as President or maybe just starting his second term. Americans were appreciated and loved. The Philippine people were very friendly and warm. Of course, that would change later on as Marcos became, effectively, a dictator. We, the American government, helped him along.
I also spent four months in Korea. I was in the 1st Mobile Communications Group (1st Mob). We had people all over the Pacific, Japan, Taiwan, and southeast Asia.
I worked in Ground Radio Maintenance. Most of my work was on HF, VHF and UHF radios on trucks and jeeps. The vehicles were used by forward-air-controllers in Vietnam.
My favorite way to pass the time was to go to Dagupan on weekends. It was on the coast. I would stay in a grass hut and eat fresh caught seafood. It was not a common American hangout, so I met a lot of locals.
