Air Force - birdshit in Hof, Germany
I left the Philippines where it never got below 76° F and went to Northern Bavaria where it hardly ever got above 76° F.
I lived in several places around our site, Doebraburg, but mostly lived in Hof. There were no other bases around, so it was almost like a civilian job.
We were an Air Traffic Control & Warning (AC&W) site. It was similar to the DEW Line (Distant Early Warning) across the northern US and Canada during the "Cold War". We just had radar and radio equipment on top of a mountain. No airbase with planes.
I loved the area and also liked to travel to Munich. The people were friendly and I was actually starting to speak some German before I left. However, I forgot it all because I haven't used it since 1972. The one thing I do remember was vogelscheisser. That's birdshit in German. Some German friends called me by that name.
